Babcock (Cooling Pump)
Mechanology were invited by Babcock for the Main Reactor Coolant Pump (MCP) for the Reactor upgrade on the Successor-class Submarine.
The MCP one of the critical systems for this reactor and Mechanology were tasked with introduction of new welding procedures and innovative pipe forming technologies

The aim was to reduce the cost and size of the current subsea connector cleaning tool, which could be handled with ease by a single ROV (remotely operated vehicle).
The access required by the ROV and its maintenance manoeuvres had to be optimised. This was accomplished by creating a 3D “flight path” for the ROV completely in CAD to confirm what access points could be reached and operated while the remaining ROV arm was fixed to the subsea structure.

Analysis of the oil system for the Type 26 frigate gearboxes to confirm all pipe sizes were appropriate for the oil flows envisaged. This had to cope with all operating scenarios. Assistance was given for the design automation links between and Solid Edge and Excel to reduce design change time.

A temporary engineering manager role due to the engineering manager being seconded into a new ERP team. The workload of the 12 strong engineering team was forecast and managed, with a further 2 engineers in India.
Fluid flow calculations and analysis undertaken to support the design work going through the department.

Appraisal and analysis of rolling element and hydrostatic bearing design in both SolidWorks/ Mathcad for a 75-tonne proton beam cancer treatment machine.
AWE Aldermaston
Design substantiation in Mathcad for a high integrity bolted joints and structures.
Veolia Nuclear Solutions
Design substantiation of a robotic mechanical drive train in Mathcad. This was for a new design of robot used in nuclear decommissioning. The analysis of the main drive gears, splines and bearings was undertaken and a proposal for uprating the design.
Culham Centre for Fusion Energy
Assessment of potential rotor & bearing life for the 2-off 775 tonne Flywheel Generator’s change of purpose.
